The Engineering Audit

A free software audit before any quote.

The audit is a free, fixed-scope review with a written result. You can act on it with us, with your own team, or with someone else.

01

What we look at

  • The code: structure, coupling, the parts that change often and the parts nobody touches
  • The data model, and the records that already contradict it
  • Deployment, environments, backups, and what happens during a failure
  • Access and security: who can reach what, and how secrets are handled
  • Performance under the load you actually have, not a synthetic benchmark
  • The gap between how the system is documented and how it behaves
02

What you receive

A written assessment, in plain language, with the technical detail attached rather than hidden. Findings are prioritised by what they cost you: incidents now, risk soon, cleanup later. It is returned within 24 to 48 working hours once the scope and necessary access are agreed and received.

Where we claim something is broken, the report contains the query, the log or the reproduction that shows it.

The review stays within the agreed scope; it is not an exhaustive security certification. If you do not need a rebuild, the report says so.

03

What we need from you

  • No repository access or credentials needed to send the initial request. For code-level findings, we later agree read-only repository access and a way to inspect or run the system
  • A short conversation with whoever knows the history
  • Logs and database structure where relevant and available; a public-only review cannot verify code, database or security findings
  • One person who can answer questions during the review
04

For systems that do not exist yet

If there is nothing built, the audit becomes a scoping review: what the system has to do, the data it must hold, the rules that cannot be broken, and a phased plan with a first release that is genuinely useful.

Two ways to start

Pick the one that matches how urgent this is.

01

Speak now

A call first. We work through the problem together and look at the system on the call.

Best when something is failing now, or when the question is whether we are the right people at all. Availability is usually within a few working days.

02

Review first

You send the material. We read it, then we meet with findings already in hand.

Once the scope and necessary access are agreed and received, we return the written assessment within 24 to 48 working hours. The follow-up call is about conclusions rather than context.

What the audit looks at

The audit is done by engineers reading your system, not by an automated scanner. With repository and system access we go through each of these layers; without it we tell you which ones we could not check.

01

Architecture

  • How the parts depend on each other
  • Single points of failure
  • What will break first as usage grows
02

Code quality

  • Duplicated or dead logic
  • Error handling and silent failures
  • Test coverage on the paths that make money
03

Data and database

  • Schema design and missing constraints
  • Slow queries and missing indexes
  • Backups and whether a restore has been tested
04

Security

  • Authentication and who can read or change what
  • Secrets in code or logs
  • Outdated dependencies with known issues
05

Performance

  • Page and API response times
  • Heavy assets and wasted requests
  • Hosting cost against actual load
06

Operations

  • How deploys happen and how to roll back
  • Monitoring and alerting
  • Manual steps that could be automated

What a finding looks like

Illustrative example of the report format. It is not taken from a real client.

Priority: High · Security

Any signed-in user can read other customers' invoices

Evidence
The invoice endpoint loads records by ID without checking who owns them.
Recommended fix
Add an ownership check on the server and a test that proves one account cannot read another's data.

Priority: Medium · Database

The orders page gets slower as orders grow

Evidence
Orders are filtered by customer and date with no index on those columns.
Recommended fix
Add one composite index; expected to turn a full table scan into a direct lookup.

Priority: Low · Operations

Deploys depend on one person's laptop

Evidence
No automated pipeline; releases are built and uploaded by hand.
Recommended fix
A simple automated deploy with a one-click rollback.

What is happening right now?

Tick anything that applies. It helps us come prepared.

At least a sentence: what is slow, broken, risky or missing.

Cost

The audit is free: there is no charge for it and no obligation to continue with us. Build engagements run from 6,800 EUR for a contained piece of work up to 100k+ for a full platform or a long refactoring programme.

Build work is quoted in writing, after the audit, before anything starts.
